RF power dividers are passive devices that are useful in providing long range point to multipoint wireless connectivity solutions. Normally omni directional antennas are used in such point to multipoint networks. However, there are several disadvantages when an omni directional antenna is used at the hub site:
(1) The omni antenna picks up lots of noise and is highly prone to interference.
(2) The gain of an omni antenna is quite low and hence the range is rather limited.
(3) Usually the omni antenna provides for only one polarization.
These disadvantages can be overcome when the hub site equipment is connected to multiple high gain directional antennas fed through a power divider. Use of multiple directional antennas reduces noise pick up and adds substantial gain to each link in the RF network. Such a network is far less prone to interference and facilitates flexible mounting of each antenna offering spatial and polarization diversity. When used this way, the hub site provides connectivity to multiple remote sites resulting in efficient usage of spectrum and savings in cost.
